The Story of Reno Burrito Project:
Blaize Abuntori decided to be part of the solution in reno when he moved from Ghana to study Data Science and Statistics at UNR. Making $16,000/yr he still decided to spend $20 a week to give back to the houseless community. In the first week he bought 4 burritos at Roberto’s and handed everything in less than a 100 meters from the shop. Feeling both happy and sad, he then decided to make the burritos, called some friends, Kristina, Humphrey, Alina and Neal to come help out and together they made and handed out 15 burritos. Then they made 30 the next week, then 40. With the support from the Reno community the Reno Burrito Project has handed over 10,000 burritos in our first year and have made 597 burritos on a single sunday.
We are now able to hand out an average of 300 burritos weekly along with water, warm clothing, books, and other community donations. We raised $2,500 for a woman undergoing breast cancer treatments while living on the street, Marie Griffiths. We have been fortunate enough to be featured in Our Town Reno, Reno Gazette Journal, KTVN Channel 2 News, and NEVADA Today.
